ちょっと前のニュースで、アマゾンの熱帯雨林を衛星で監視することで違法伐採をより早く発見するシステムができたと聞きました。 現在、日本の大学（記録し忘れてどこだか分かりません）と提携を組んで、リアルタイムで監視を行い、違法伐採をしている地域を発見すると、すぐさま現地の警察を派遣するとのことです。 こう言った、衛星を使った熱帯雨林の監視は実はもう少し前から始まっていたようで、ブラジルの原住民がグーグルアースを利用して、熱帯雨林保護地区の森林伐採や金の発掘の抑制に取り組もうとしているというニュースもみつけました。 熱帯雨林は地球上の森林面積の約半分、約20億ヘクタールを占めており、熱帯雨林に食料、生活用品などを依存している原住民は数多く存在しています。 また、地球上には500万から1000万種の生物が生息していると言われていますが、そのうちの約半数が熱帯雨林に生息していると考えられています。 しかし、現在熱帯雨林はすでにその40パーセントが失われ、さらに年間1700万ヘクタール（本州の面積の約2分の１）が失われつつあると推定されています。 その主な原因のひとつとして挙げられるのが、違法伐採なのです。 ブラジル政府は、アマゾンで行われている商業伐採のうちのおよそ80%は違法伐採であるということをすでに認めています。 違法伐採された木材は、他国の安い家具などの木製品を造るために輸出され、日本、アメリカ、イタリア、フランスなど輸入国の殆どがそれを食い止める対策を行っていません。 こんな中で、違法伐採を抑制させる具体的な手段が見つかったのは、喜ぶべきことだと思います。 こういった現地での努力、インターネットの普及により、違法伐採が少しでも減少していけばいいと思います。 また、消費者側の私たちも、身の回りの木材製品に普段から疑問を投げかけることが大切ではないでしょうか。 ＜参考文献＞ ブラジル原住民、グーグルアースで森林伐採を監視/IBTimes http://jp.ibtimes.com/tb.php?id=8827 熱帯雨林の構造と種の多様性/HARMONY vol.12 http://wwwj2.comp.eng.himeji-tech.ac.jp/news/docs/hm12-3.html アマゾン 〜世界最大の熱帯林〜/Green Peace http://www.greenpeace.or.jp/campaign/forests/amazon/ |
